


Puno was founded in 1668 as Villa Rica de San Carlos de Puno by the viceroy the Count of Lemos. Today the city is known as the Folkloric Capital of Peru because of the wealth of its cultural and artistic expressions, particularly the tradition dances which are the highpoint of the celebrations held each year in February during the Fiesta of the Virgin of Candelaria, which is the biggest celebration of its kind in southern Peru.
The city of Puno is the highest city in southern Peru, at 12,629 feet (3,827 metres), and it is located in a bay on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The lake has been the focal point of many of the greatest pre-Hispanic civilizations, and many archaeological sites can be visited today.
At an altitude of 12,573 feet (8,810 metres), Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and the one of the largest lakes in South America. It is located on the high Andean plateau between Peru and Bolivia. The Titicaca National Reserve was established in 1978 in order to protect the flora, fauna and scenic beauty of the area, as well as to maintain the cultural traditions of the people who live around the lakeshore and on the many islands on the Peruvian side of the lake.
Sillustani: Sillustani is located on the peninsula of Lake Umayo, 34 km from Puno. It is a pre- Incan cemetery, containing a series of tombs, which belong to the Qolla culture. The tombs are shaped as upside down cone trunks which are called Chullpas. The burials were done in the average part of the cone tomb. The mummies were placed in the fetal positions with their property, including gold and silver objects, ceramic utensils and food.

Uros Floating Islands: The islands of the Uros are located in the bay of Puno on Lake Titicaca. The islands can be reached by using a motor boat service from the city of Puno. The Uros are comprised of more than 45 floating islands, formed and built on Totora reeds. They are inhabited by the Uros, descendants of indigenous inhabitants of the ancient cultures of America. The main economic activities of the Uros are fishing and hunting. The inhabitants also engage in the production of woolen textiles, carpets and dissected birds, all of which are sold to visitors.
Amantani Island: The occupation of Amantani dates back to the pre- Incan times. On the upper part of the island, important buildings, including the temple of Pacha Mama and Pacha Tata, can be visited. A population of approximately 800 families, in eight communities, inhabits the island. Their main livelihood is agriculture; producing potatoes, barley and beans. Amantani Island is located on the eastern side of the peninsula Capachica, north of the island of Taquile, in Lake Titicaca.
Taquile Island: Located 45 km from Puno on Lake Titicaca, The economy of Taquile is based on fishing, agriculture and tourism. Their success is due to the collective work of the people. The inhabitants of Taquile are famous for their woolen textiles, which are highly prized for their fine finish. These textiles are primarily spun and woven for men.
Suasi Island: Suasi is a private island, dedicated to promoting the protection of the ecosystem. Suasi contains 43 hectares of tranquility, where man can live in harmony with nature. There is a newly built lodge on the island which is operated by Hotels Casa Andina. It is equipped with solar technology, which supplies most of the lodge’s energy. It is the first truly eco-lodge of Peru, in terms of design and construction.
