Founded by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, principally because of the strategic location of its port at the centre of both the Peruvian coast and the South American coast in general, Lima very quickly became the most important city in the Americas, a centre for the power and wealth which were the result of the commercial and cultural activities of the viceroyalty.
Also known as the “City of Kings”, Lima boasts monumental architecture which can be best appreciated today by visiting its baroque and renaissance churches, mansions and colonial palaces, as well as its universities and archbishop’s palace. Lima is a melting pot of diverse peoples and cultures – the result of a multiculturalism which surprises all visitors. The city’s innovative culinary tradition is ranked among the finest in the world, and Lima has been declared the Gastronomic Capital of Latin America.
Lima offers the visitor many archaeological and natural attractions, excellent history museums and art galleries, theatrical presentations and cultural exhibitions, modern shopping malls, and a variety of restaurants and bars where one can enjoy both local and international food and drink.
The Cathedral of Lima: The Catedral de Lima was constructed in the City of King’s Plaza de Armas (main square). It is part of the Patrimony of Humanity, as the historical center of the City. It is one of the most beautiful colonial buildings that exist in Peru. The Church was inaugurated in 1540, with the name of Asuncion de Nuestra Señora.
The Cathedral replicates the Church of Seville, Spain. The crypt containing the body of Francisco Pizarro is there, covered completely with mosaics pertaining to the Conquest.
The Monastery of San Francisco: The Monasterio de San Francisco is one of the most important and better architectural monuments in the city. Constructed in the center of Lima in the 16th century, it exemplifies the history and architecture of colonial art.
The greatest attraction for most visitors is the “Catacombs of San Francisco”. The catacombs were shaped by a series of underground passages where graves were given to the former inhabitants of the Capital. It is estimated that the catacombs contain the remains of more than 25,000 people.
Larco Herrera Museum: Founded in 1926, The Museo Larco Herrera contains a chronological display of impressive galleries that showcase the exceptional panorama of 3000 years of development of the history of pre-Columbian Peru. The Museum Larco Herrera is one of only a few museums in the world where visitors are welcome in the warehouse and can view 45,000 archaeologically classified objects, which constitutes an unforgettable experience. The works of art of the Museum Larco Herrera have been exhibited in the most prestigious museums in the world and are deemed internationally as icons of pre-Columbian art.
