The window to the heart of the Andes

AUSANGATE TREK LOOP CIRCUIT 5D/4N

The majestic mountain Apu Ausangate has been a protector of hundreds of ethnic groups for thousands of years in the southern region of the Peruvian Andes. Local people believe it is sacred and call upon the spirit of the mountain to provide water, a fruitful harvest and protection for themselves, their families and their animals. This route opens the way to high mountain passes, plains, lakes, rivers and streams under the watchful protection of this Apu mountain god.

Day 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis

We leave early in the morning from Cusco through the Inter-oceanic highway (connects Peru through Brazil via Puerto Maldonado) to the community of Tinki (12540 ft / 3800 m), which is the starting point of the trail. After meeting our horsemen and horses we start with a gentle ascent for about five hours via a mule track that goes through the farming areas to the camp in Upis (14520 ft / 4400 m), a small farming community that is located right in front of the great and majestic snow capped mountain. En route is possible that we will see many Llamas, Alpacas and birds.

Day 2: Upis – Ausangateqocha

The path goes up for an hour and a half until the first mountain pass called Arapa (16005 ft / 4850 m) where we will have great views of Ausangate mountain. On the way down after the pass, we will hike alongside small lakes (Vinoqocha and Yanaqocha) where we may see wild animals such as Vizcachas, the Andean rodents that live among the rocks. We will also see a variety of lakes that show different colors (Uchuy Pukaqocha, Pukaqocha, Hatun Pukaqocha) (14520 ft / 4400 m) due the aquatic plants and minerals that exist in water. After lunch the path goes uphill for three hours towards the Apacheta pass (16170 ft / 4900 m) from where we can see the camp which is located in the valley next to the lake Ausangateqocha (14520 ft / 4400 m).

Day 3: Ausangateqocha – Q’ampa

This is a beautiful day due to the changes in geography and altitude. We start early in the morning hiking uphill for two hours to Palomani mountain pass (16830 ft / 5100 m) which is the highest of the entire route. From here we hike down to the valley and climb again for two hours through the moraines of Ausangate towards the lake Qochajasa (16160 ft / 4900 m) which originated due the melting of the Santa Catalina snow capped mountain. In the afternoon we descend to the Q'ampa valley (14520 ft / 4400 m) and then continue climbing for two hours until we reach our camp in Q'ampa (14850 ft / 4500 m).

Day 4: Q’ampa – Pacchanta Hot Springs

The day starts uphill for two hours to Q'ampa mountain pass (16500 ft / 5000 m), where we may see some native White Tailed Deer and graceful Vicuñas. We hike down for two and a half hours to our lunch spot at the turquoise Lake Qomerqocha (14520 ft / 4400 m). In the afternoon we descend for two more hours towards Pacchanta camp (14190 ft / 4300 m) where we relax at the thermal baths.

Day 5: Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco

Only three hours away is the community of Tinki, our bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco city.
