From the desert of Lima you will fly to The Tambopata Natural Reserve, located in the heart of the Peruvian jungle. You will enjoy the greenery of nature, the sounds of birds, the behavior of mammals and sunsets on the wide jungle rivers. You will visit Cuzco, “the former capital of the great Inca Empire" and its large, ancient constructions of pre-Hispanic and colonial epochs. You will walk the 8 miles of the amazing "short" Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and will enjoy of its history and archaeology in two unforgettable days.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN LIMA - TRANSFER TO HOTEL

After disembarking from your international flight, you will be greeted and escorted to your hotel in Lima.

DAY 2: LIMA CITY TOUR

You will tour Lima, “The City of Kings” where the ancient culture exists amidst a modern thriving city.  You will begin touring through the districts of Miraflores and San Isidro, which form the modern part of the city.  These districts contain theaters, art galleries, shopping malls and many green areas. Then you will go to the Plaza de Armas, surrounded by the Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace and the City Municipality. The historic city center is where the catacombs of San Fransisco Monastery exist.  You will have the opportunity to visit them, as they are the only catacombs in Peru. You will lunch in a charming restaurant serving delightful Peruvian food. The afternoon tour includes a visit to the Larco Herrera Museum, which displays the largest collection of Peruvian pre-Columbian objects.  There are 45,000 pieces displayed in beautiful rooms and galleries, all a “must see”.

DAY 3: FLIGHT TO PUERTO MALDONADO - TRANSFER TO JUNGLE LODGE

Upon your arrival at the airport in Puerto Maldonado, you will be met by your guides and go to the local offices of your jungle lodge.  You will need to leave any luggage which will not be used during your stay in the jungle lodge. You will then go to the pier to board a motorboat for the 45 minute ride to your lodge. Upon your arrival, you will be received by the lodge manager, who will give you a safety and navigation briefing. In the afternoon you will be guided to a platform located in the heights of the trees (canopy tower) near the lodge. From the platform you will have spectacular views of the forest that houses thousands of animals. The forest looks like a green carpet, bisected by the meandering river, Tambopata. From the platform you will also see flocks of parrots, parakeets and other birds perched on the tops of huge trees. In the evening you will attend an ecotourism lecture given by the lodge staff.

DAY 4: JUNGLE LODGE - TRES CHIMBADAS LAKE - PARROT CLAY LINK

You will board a motorboat for a 30 minute ride towards the beginning of the road, which takes us to the lake, Three Chimbadas. The walk will last forty-five minutes. At the lake, you will ride a catamaran to search for the resident family of giant river otters (60% of visitors are able to see them), and other animal species such as alligators, birds and monkeys. You will return to the area of the lodge pier and will motorboat for 20 minutes to the Parrot Clay Lick, where you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets, which descend to the river every morning to eat the clay minerals that are essential to their diet. The clay licks are more crowded late morning or at noon. You will have lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon you will board the boat again for a twenty minute ride to the Ethno Botanical Center at Ñape, a communal organization producing medicine from jungle plants.  This medicine is administered to patients at the clinic in the community. You will hike along a trail, where your guide will explain about native plants and their medicinal properties. At night, accompanied by your guide, you can take an optional walk in the forest to look for animals.  Nights is when most wild mammals are active, but rarely are seen.

DAY 5: FLIGHT TO CUZCO - TRANSFER TO HOTEL IN URUBAMBA

In the morning, depending on your flight, you will leave the lodge and will board a boat heading to the city of Puerto Maldonado.  You pick up your luggage and transfer to the airport to board your flight to the city of Cuzco. Upon your arrival at the airport in Cuzco, you will be met by your guide, who will escort you to your hotel, located one hour from the city of Cuzco, in Urubamba. On route you will enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains, complete with farmlands. You will have the afternoon free to rest and acclimatize to the altitude.

DAY 6: SACRED VALLEY - CHINCHERO - OLLANTAYTAMBO

You will drive through the Urubamba River Valley to Pisaq. You will visit the archaeological site showing hundreds of Inca farming terraces and impressive buildings built on top of the mountain. Then you will visit the colorful traditional market at Pisaq and will have the opportunity to negotiate purchase prices with local vendors. You will not want to miss the opportunity to try the famous “empanadas”, which are made traditionally in mud brick ovens “bakeries” by the locals. In the afternoon you will drive to the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, which consists of 200 steps going to the mountain top, where the Inca temple is located. There you will see impressive views of the valley and the town. You will have the option of walking through the town of Ollantaytambo and visiting a local family to witness the lifestyle of some families in the Peruvian Andes.

DAY 7: TRAIN TO KM104 - SHORT INCA TRAIL - ARRIVAL IN MACHU PICHU

You will have an early morning departure to the train station to catch the train that will take you to Km104, starting point of the Inca trail. The path starts, after the control point, with a visit to the Inca ruins of Chachabamba (7095 ft / 2150 m). You will then ascend along the left flank of the Urubamba River Valley for four hours to Wiñaywayna (8910 ft / 2700 m). In the beginning, the vegetation is sparse and the temperature is high. After several hours you will reach the cloud forest and a spectacular waterfall. Here you will hike up steep steps along stone staircases of the archaeological site of Wiñaywayna, which is the most spectacular Inca settlement found along the Inca trail. Here at Wiñaywayna, there is a lodge for those who hike the four day Inca trail. This is the perfect place to enjoy lunch (the porters will cook). In the afternoon you will walk for two more hours through the forested mountains of Machu Picchu. On the way to the Sun Gate (8992 ft / 2725 m), you will enjoy spectacular views of cliffs and the Urubamba River Canyon. Upon arrival at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), you will have your first glimpse of Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas (8085 ft / 2450 m). When you arrive at Machu Picchu (8085 ft / 2450 m) you will check in at the Hotel.

DAY 8: MACHU PICCHU - TOURING THE CITY - TRAIN BACK TO CUZCO

You will rise early to enjoy the sunrise over Machu Picchu. Today you will visit Machu Picchu, and then opt to hike up the mountain known as Huayna Picchu (which appears in all the classic photographs of Machu Picchu). Other options include the thirty-minute hike to the Inca drawbridge. In the afternoon you will take the train back to Cuzco.

DAY 9: CUZCO CITY TOUR

The city of Cusco boasts many tourist attractions and now you will see what the city has to offer. You will visit the Sun Temple, also known as Qorikancha, once the most important Inca temple throughout the empire, making Cuzco a destination for religious pilgrims. In the main square of the city, you will visit the Cathedral of Cuzco, which is one of the most decorated churches in Latin America. You will visit the temple of the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a huge monolithic structure ascending over the hills above the city. Some of the stones used in the construction of Sacsayhuaman are the size of a truck.

DAY 10: CUZCO MORNINNG FREE - FLIGHT TO LIMA

Morning is free to relax or walk along the streets of the historic center of Cusco on the last day of   your stay. In the afternoon you will be escorted to the airport to board your flight to Lima.
