Tambopata National Reserve is located in the department of Madre de Dios, south of the Madre de Dios River in the districts of Tambopata and Inambari of Tambopata province. It covers an area of 278284 hectares.
The Nature Reserve of Tambopata Candamo is a valuable rescource. It has retained its original ecology and is one of the best examples of the Amazon variety in Peru. This reserve is bisected by the river Tambopata and houses three different ecosystems: the eastern slopes of the Andes, the Amazonian lowlands and the plains ecosystem.
Tambopata has outstanding biodiversity. It contains more species of birds (nearly 600) and butterflies (1200) than any place of similar size on the planet, as well as a dozen different types of forest, gorgeous oxbow lakes, and at least 13 endangered animal species. The famous Tambopata macaw lick, where thousands of brilliantly colored macaws and parrots gather daily for feedings, ranks as one of the wildlife highlights of Peru.
Brief History
The Reserve was established on January 3, 1977 as Tambopata (ZRT), the traditional tribal territory Ese'eja. It was created for the Amazon forest conservation and scientific research of flowers and animals, and for tourism as well. In July 1977, the government had an arrangement with the Peruvian company for safaris. They were given the responsibility of Tambopata just for 5 years. In 1983, the Pampas del Heath National Sanctuary (SNPH) with surfaces 105, 957 has. was established. The purpose was to protect the "great moist tropical savanna" of Peru. By 1990, thanks to government efforts to protect biodiversity, it was appointed as the area ZRTC. Tambopata was officially created on January 26, 1990 as an initiative of the Peruvian government. Tambopata National Reserve was declared by the supreme law # 048-2000-AG by the area planning committee. This matter was drawn at the bottom of the "conservation of tropical ecosystems projects and sustainable use of natural resources within the reserve area of Tambopata Candamo. Also, a wet area of the Tambopata National Reserve was determined as Bahuaja Sonene National Park, comprising 271,582 hectares of exclusive reserve of Tambopata - Candamo
