MANU PARK
The Manu is located in the southeastern region of Peru. The Manu Park area is located between the wet mountainous Cusco department and the jungle region of the department of Madre de Dios. This area was declared a National Park in 1973 in order to protect its great diversity of flora and fauna and its expansive pristine areas. It was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and a World Natural Heritage Site in 1987 by UNESCO. Remote Manu is as close as you are likely to come to virgin rainforest anywhere. It is the second largest area in Peru. It’s incredibly varied habitats include Andes highlands; cloud forests, and low land tropical rain forests. One hectare (2.5 acres) of forest in Manu could have ten times the number of species of trees found in a hectare of temperate forest in Europe or North America, and Manu has the highest bird, mammal, and plant diversity of any park on the planet. The reserve is one of the world’s finest for birding (greater than even all of Costa Rica). Other wildlife includes giant river otters, cock-of-the-rock birds, and perhaps 15000 animal species, as well as native Amerindian tribes that remain untouched by the modern world. With over 2 million hectares, it’s territory is rich in flora and fauna. This includes a wide variety of habitats: humid highlands, cloud forests and rainforests. Manu Park protects 10% of the plant species in the world. TOURS AND TRAVEL IN MANU PARK ![]() PERU CLOUD FOREST
