This Peruvian experience combines culture and adventure along the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, the highway which was walked by thousands of former Peruvians during the great Inca Empire. You will visit Lima, the capital of Peru, known as the gastronomic capital of South America. You will be delighted with its culture, colonial architecture, ancient art collection and gastronomy. From the arid coast, you will cross the Andes to visit Cuzco the ancient capital of the great Inca Empire. The city is decorated with fine Inca architecture and impressive colonial European art. You will explore the spectacular Sacred Valley of the Incas, full of history and culture, before you start the 27 mile journey to the world’s astonishing Machu Picchu. Along the Inca trail you will visit many Inca settlements, will walk through the clouds on high mountain passes, will cross the subtropical cloud forest of the Peruvian jungle, and will encamp in wonderful places rich with scenic beauty, and utilize some of the best camping equipment  in Peru. This incredible journey along the Inca Trail will be made possible due to our faithful carriers, “porters”, who will load and carry your camping equipment, luggage and food during the days of hike.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN LIMA - TRANSFER TO HOTEL

Upon your arrival in Peru, we will meet you at the airport and accompany you to the hotel in Lima which is located in Miraflores district, one of the most beautiful and prosperous districts in Lima. This district is the home of lovely green park-like areas, hotels and fine dining establishments.

DAY 2: LIMA CITY TOUR

You will have all day to visit Lima, which was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in 1535 and is known as the City of Kings. We will drive through a number of districts on your way to the historic center of the city, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will visit the 17th century San Francisco church and convent, with its catacombs and the Cathedral of Lima.

DAY 3: FLIGHT TO CUSCO - CUSCO CITY TOUR

You will be transferred to the airport for the one hour flight to Cuzco. On arrival you will be met by our representative and transferred to the hotel. In the afternoon you will start your first sightseeing journey in Cuzco. You will visit the Inca Temple of the Sun, called Qorikancha and the magnificent main square with its imposing 17th century Cathedral of Cuzco. High above the city center in the surrounding hills, you will see the remains of the monolithic fortified temple complex of Saqsayhuamán.

DAY 4: SACRED VALLEY TOUR - LLAMA FARM - PISAQ - OLLANTAYTAMBO

Today you will leave the city for a full day tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, which is the setting for many Inca archaeological sites, as well as stunning scenery comprised of agricultural terraces crowned by high peaks. The valley floor is home to traditional villages where many aspects of local life continue unchanged. You will visit the Awanacancha ranch, with its llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicuñas, and then continue to the village of Pisaq. Here you will have plenty of time to visit the colorful local market of this peaceful colonial village, before lunching at the exclusive Casa Hacienda Orihuela, with its collection of Inca artifacts and colonial-era art. After lunch you will drive through the Sacred Valley to the village of Ollantaytambo, which is the last remaining example of Inca urban planning. Here you will visit the fortress temple of Ollantaytambo as well as the village itself.

DAY 5: INCA TRAIL (KM82 - LLACTAPATA)

You will leave the hotel in Cusco and drive to Km 82 along the railroad from Cuzco to Machu Picchu, which is the starting point of the Inca Trail Trek. Today will be a quiet easy walking day, allowing you to adjust to the hike and high altitude. You will hike for about two hours on relatively flat terrain on the left bank of the Urubamba River, then you will start ascending along a narrow path to Willkaraqay ( 9570 ft / 2900 m) view point. From here you will see the confluence of two river valleys (Urubamba and Cusichaca), a very impressive view of Veronica snow capped mountain, and the Inca archaeological site of Llactapata (8745 ft / 2650 m). After lunch you will descen to the valley of the river Cusichaca and camp in front of the archaeological site of Llactapata.

DAY 6: INCA TRAIL (LLACTAPATA - LLULLUCHAPAMPA)

When trekking in the Andes you have to wake up early so that you can begin the day by walking before the sun is strongest. Today you will gradually ascend along the Cusichaca river valley for one and a half hours to the farming community of Wayllabamba (9900 ft / 3000 m). Here you will start one of the most difficult parts of the trek, the steep ascent to Warmihuañuska pass or Dead Woman’s Pass (13860 ft / 4200 m), the first and highest mountain pass in the Inca Trail. The total hike to the pass will be 14.4 miles, today you only hike half way up to the pass and camp at Llulluchapampa (12210 ft / 3700 m), located in a beautiful area above the valley with fine views of the surrounding mountains and Huayanay snow-capped peak. En route you will see vegetation of the cloud forest area, habitat of many birds and mammals such us the white tailed deer, spectacled bear and a great variety of birds.

DAY 7: INCA TRAIL (LLULLUCHAPAMPA - PHUYUPATAMARCA)

Today will be the longest day of the Inca trek to Machu Picchu, as you hike up to Dead Woman’s Pass (13860 ft / 4200 m) which is the highest point on the Inca Trail. You will hike for six hours on an original Inca highway, visiting the archaeological sites of Runkuracay and Sayacmarca.  After lunch you will walk for another two hours along a paved Inca highway through lush cloud forest to the next campsite at Phuyupatamarca (12210 ft / 3700 m), which overlooks the Urubamba river valley. At this spot the sunrises are spectacular. From here you also have fine views of Mount Salkantay, which is the highest snow-capped mountain in the region (20694 ft / 6271 m).

DAY 8: INCA TRAIL (PHUYUPATAMARCA - MACHU PICCHU)

Today you will make an early start for the last six miles to Machu Picchu. The trail descends for about two and a half hours to Wiñaywayna (8910 ft / 2700 m). This is often described as the most beautiful Inca site on the entire Inca Trail Trek. After visiting the site you will have lunch and in the afternoon, will hike for another two hours through the forest to the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu, from where you will see the first panoramic view of the Inca city. When you arrive at Machu Picchu (8085 ft / 2450 m) you will check in at the hotel.

 DAY 9: MACHU PICCHU - TRAIN BACK TO CUZCO

Today you can enjoy the sunrise over Machu Picchu. Today you will visit Machu Picchu and later opt to hike up the mountain known as Huayna Picchu (which appears in all the classic photographs of Machu Picchu). Other options include the thirty-minute hike to the Inca drawbridge. In the evening you will board the luxury Hiram Bingham train back to Cuzco. During the train ride a four-course a la carte dinner will be served onboard. On arrival at the train station in Poroy you will be transferred by private vehicle to the hotel in Cuzco.

DAY 10: HALF DAY FREE IN CUZCO - FLIGHT TO LIMA

You will have the morning free to relax or wander around Cuzco’s historic center. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Lima.
