Founded by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535, principally
because of the strategic location of its port at the centre of both the Peruvian
coast and the South American coast in general, Lima very quickly became the
most important city in the Americas, a centre for the power and wealth which
were the result of the commercial and cultural activities of the viceroyalty.
Also known as the “City of Kings”, Lima boasts monumental architecture which can be best appreciated today by visiting its baroque and renaissance churches, mansions and colonial palaces, as well as its universities and archbishop’s palace. Lima is a melting pot of diverse peoples and cultures – the result of a multiculturalism which surprises all visitors. The city’s innovative culinary tradition is ranked among the finest in the world, and Lima has been declared the Gastronomic Capital of Latin America.
Lima offers the visitor many archaeological and natural attractions, excellent history museums and art galleries, theatrical presentations and cultural exhibitions, modern shopping malls, and a variety of restaurants and bars where one can enjoy both local and international food and drink.
