CUSCO

Cusco was founded by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1534, who gave it the name Cusco, Noble and Great City. Cusco had already been the capital of the great Inca Empire, which was the largest empire ever seen in the Americas. Cusco, possessing an incomparable cultural legacy, was commonly known as the Historical Capital of Peru. It has become the most important travel destination in Peru. Today the historic city centre is a fusion of the cultural and architectural influences of both the Inca and Spanish colonial periods.

The great history reflected in the buildings of the historic centre began in pre-Inca times and continued through the Inca, colonial and republican periods. In fact, Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in South America and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is situated in the highlands of southern Peru.

Cusco is home to Machu Picchu, which has been voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Cusco’s rich calendar of annual folkloric events, festivals and religious celebrations reveals local culture for what it truly is; a complex and fascinating symbiosis of many cultures, religions and traditions.
