COLCA VALLEY

Northeast of Arequipa city, is the volcano El Misti, flanked by volcanoes Chachani and Pichu Pichu (which can be viewed from the main square of the city). Beyond those mountains is the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. This place is a paradise for nature lovers and Andean culture. The Colca Valley has a large number of agricultural terraces that were built in pre Hispanic eras by pre Inca cultures. Today the descendants of these ancient cultures live in 14 picturesque villages, all keeping alive their traditional way of life, dress, and feasts. The villagers are direct descendants of the Collahua and Cabana cultures.
The Colca Canyon is located in southern Peru in the Andes mountain range. It is the second deepest canyon in the world, and more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States of America, although the canyon's walls are not as vertical. The Colca River starts in the Andes Mountains between Condoroma and Crucero Alto, above 4500m. The Colca River has four different names before arriving to the Pacific Ocean: Colca River, Andamayo River, Majes River and finally Camana River.
The Canyon is home of the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), the world’s biggest flying bird. The condors can be seen at fairly close range as they fly through the canyon. They are an increasingly popular tourist attraction.  The Cruz del Condor is a very popular tourist stop to spot the Condors,  which generally can be seen in the morning when they fly over the canyon taking advantage of the rising thermals occurring as the air warms. At the “Mirador” or “Cruz Del Condor” the elevation is 1200 meters above the Colca River and 4300 meters above sea level.
