AREQUIPA

Arequipa is the largest city in southern Peru and is located in the Chili River Valley, forming a fertile oasis in this arid landscape located on the east side of the Andes.
The city was founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistador Garci Manuel de Carbajal, who named the city as Villa de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora del Valle Hermoso de Arequipa. Today it is known as the White City of Arequipa, due the white volcanic rock "sillar" used in the construction of large and majestic buildings in the colonial and republican eras. Within the city is the historic center which undoubtedly represents the main tourist attractions of the city, including colonial houses, palaces, churches and monasteries such as Santa Catalina, which is the oldest of Peru. Among these architectural attractions is the Santury Museum where the mummy Juanita is exhibited. This frozen lady was discovered in 1995 in the crater of the volcano Ampato in the same region.
